Sony is hoping to tell as many as 200-million PS3's over the next five years

Business Week is reporting that Sony is expecting to sell 200-million
PS3’s within the next five years, with 12-million consoles
sold within the first year alone.
As we have discussed on several occasions, the cost of manufacturing the Playstation 3 is going to be incredibly high. With that in mind, Sony is banking on selling as many consoles as possible to help offset the cost of manufacturing for the cell processor and other components.
The PS3 is also carrying the load of showcasing the incredible power of the Cell Processor, and the benefits of Blu-Ray discs.
However selling that many consoles in only five years will prove to be a tough task for the tech giant. Comparatively, the Playstation 2 only sold approximately 100-million in the same time span.
Discussing how the PS3 will be able to reach such huge sales is beyond the scope of this article, but with the console being “more” than a gaming system and equipped with Blu-Ray, Sony believes they will have a product that will sell.
