What does the delay mean for Sony and its next-gen race with Microsoft?

Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter, a well-known name in the video game industry, doesn't think that Microsoft's year-long lead over the PlayStation 3 is going to give them much of an advantage.

Sony's secret weapon? Pachter points to the next-generation DVD format Blu-ray, which is included in every PS3. "If Sony wins the Blu-ray/HD DVD battle, Sony's going to pass MS like they're standing still," he told GameDAILY. "There's no chance in hell that Toshiba sells more standalone HD DVD players than Sony sells PS3s; it's not even possible."

For the record, Pachter doesn't see Sony stumbling into the same shortage situation that nearly derailed Microsoft's Xbox 360 launch -- he sees the delay as Sony's way of ensuring a sufficient supply.

And for the price, Pachter predicts the PS3 will weigh in with a $499 price tag for the US launch.
