Concept / Storyboard Artists flesh out the game with sketches and paintings of characters, levels, vehicles, and other elements in a game. This will give an early feel for the game. Character artists as well as level designers much of the time fill this role.

Character Artists & Animators work with 3D programs such as Maya or 3DS Max to produce the characters and objects that make up the video games.

Level Designers

Texture Artists give the skins to levels and characters. They have to make sure the textures are properly mapped onto the 3D objects and backgrounds in a convincing and seamless way.

Training

There are degree programs and technical training available in video game design at colleges, universities and vocational schools across the country. Through these programs you can gain a thorough education in video game design, and character design that will prepare you for a great career in the growing field of video game design and character design. In these programs you will learn how to use state of the art computer hardware and software programs that will allow you to create multiple levels of video games from the initial storyboards to the final project. You will also learn to read and use basic computer languages such as C++ for writing video games, as well as paint programs such as Flash, used for the drawing and animation of video game characters.


In a video game design course, you will also receive technical training in areas such as storyboarding, drawing, characterization, modeling, editing and interactive media and game design, which will provide you with further application and animation skills, and a broader foundation of video game design, and in particular character design.
